Geosensors to Support Crop Production: Current Applications and User Requirements
Sensor technology, which benefits from high temporal measuring resolution, real-time data transfer and high spatial resolution of sensor data that shows in-field variations, has the potential to provide added value for crop production. The present paper explores how sensors and sensor networks have been utilised in the crop production process and what their added-value and the main bottlenecks are from the perspective of users. -
Geochemical Assessment of the Impact of Mine Tailings Reclamation on the Quality of Soils at AngloGold Concession, Obuasi, Ghana
This study assessed the geochemical impact of mine tailings reclamation on the quality of soils from the AngloGold Concession, Obuasi, Ghana. Soil samples from mine tailings reclamation sites were evaluated for the concentrations of plant nutrients and trace metals. Contaminations of trace metals, using geochemical pollution indices were used to assess possible effects on agriculture and livelihoods. The average pH ranges from 7.6 to 8.4 at the ex-tailing sites while the control site is 6.0. Organic carbon and nitrogen levels at the extailings site are low due to topsoil loss. -
Leaf resorption efficiency in relation to foliar and soil nutrient concentrations and stoichiometry of Cunninghamia lanceolata with stand development in southern China
Purpose The relationships among resorption, leaf nutrient status, and soil nutrient availability remain unresolved. Moreover, the dynamics of resorption in leaf and soil nutrients and stoichiometry during development of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) stands have rarely been studied. -
Application of Radial Basis Function Network with a Gaussian Function of Artificial Neural Networks in Osmo-dehydration of Plant Materials
The study presents a critical evaluation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in food processing by successfully predicting the mass transfer in three plant materials. The used of ANNs in osmo-dehydration was evaluated using two varieties of apple (Malus domestica Borkh) of Golden Delicious and Cox, banana cultivar Cavendish and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) variety Estima. -
Understanding the Concept of Food Sovereignty Using the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP)
This article deepens the understanding of the emerging food sovereignty concept using a case study of a home-grown school feeding programme that promotes local food demand supply linkages. A school feeding programme in four selected districts in Ghana is analysed with respect to community involvement in programme implementation and management as well as its socio-economic impacts. -
Physicochemical characteristics and microbiological quality of senescent plantain products
Senescent plantains have relatively very rapid deterioration rate compared to plantains at other ripening stages. In Ghana, they are used for products which are consumed either as a snack or a main meal. -
Forest biomass, productivity and carbon cycling along a rainfall gradient in West Africa
Net primary productivity (NPP) is one of the most important parameters in describing the functioning of any ecosystem and yet it arguably remains a poorly quantified and understood component of carbon cycling in tropical forests, especially outside of the Americas. We provide the first comprehensive analysis of NPP and its carbon allocation to woody, canopy and root growth components at contrasting lowland West African forests spanning a rainfall gradient. -

Growth and yield performance of different exotic strains of eight pleurotus species cultivated on Triplochiton scleroxylon in Ghana
The mycelia growth rate, physical characteristics of first flush, number of flushes and biological efficiency of twenty three exotic strains of eight Pleurotus species grown on composted sawdust of Triplochiton scleroxylon K (Schum) were studied. -
Effects of Leaf Age and Exogenous Hormones on Callus Initiation, Rooting Formation, Bud Germination, and Plantlet Formation in Chinese Fir Leaf Cuttings
To guide the cultivation of superior Chinese fir plantlets, we designed an L16(4)4 orthogonal experiment to determine how leaf age and exogenous hormones influence key growth processes in leaf cuttings.
