Abstract
The utilization of Africa mahogany (Khaya spp.) bark extract in traditional medicine in disease treatment is well known. This investigation was undertaken to better understand and compare the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial activities of bark extracts from four species of African mahogany namely, K. ivorensis, K. grandifoliola, K. anthotheca and K. senegalensis. The antimicrobial activities of the bark extracts of the four species against gram-positive and gramnegative bacteria strains and a single fungus were evaluated. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of glycosides, tannins, terpenes, saponins, and anthraquinones in all extracts. The ethanol extracts had better antimicrobial activity at 20 mg/ml compared to the aqueous extracts. Only few microorganisms were resistant to some extracts at lower concentrations. Extracts of K. senegalensis and K. anthotheca had the best antimicrobial activity in aqueous and ethanol respectively.
