Abstract

The effectiveness of synthetic progesterone in synchronising oestrus in Djallonke ewes was evaluated in 25- three year-old multiparous ewes. The ewes received intravaginal sponges con- taining 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) for 14 days. Three rams were introduced into the ewes 48 hours after sponge withdrawal. Oestrus was observed in all the ewes within four days of introducing rams. Eighty four per cent (84%) of the ewes lambed within an eight- day interval. Fertility and prolificacy rates were 100% each. Results of this study showed that synchronised oestrus, high fertility and prolificacy as well as batch lambing are achievable in Djallonke ewes following MAP treatment.
