Abstract

Twelve male Djallonke x Sahelian crossbred sheep, 21.8 ± 1.08 kg, with diarrhoea condition were randomly put into two groups of six each. Group 1 was used as the Control while Group 2 animals were subjected to a Pi-Yu point of acupuncture for 30 min daily on 3 consecutive days. All the treated sheep recovered from the diarrhoea condition by the fourth day whereas none in the Control group recovered during the 7-day observation period. No detrimental effects resulted from the acupuncture treatment. In view of the simplicity, low cost and efficacy of acupuncture treatment of diarrhoea in this study, its adoption would help to increase access of resource-poor farmers to animal health care delivery services.
