Abstract

This paper provides data on trend of meat and livestock, products production and consumption in Ghana from-1005 to 2009. Domestic meat, milk gild egg production increased by 945,900 metric tons over the period with milk recording the highest production. A total of 16,994 ruminants, 1,746 pigs, and 199,400 poultry were slaughtered for meat. Importation of live animals was highest in 2009, there was no importation of pigs over the period as a result of the outbreaks of African swine fever. Importation • of meat and livestock products increased each year to meet growing demand. The per capita cask expenditure on meat and dairy products was higher in the urban than in the rural areas, and the•, national per capita meat consumption of meat was lower than that of the Sub-Sahalian consumption. The data on meat and meat products production provided in this review are projections from 1996 census which had a lot of challenges. There is therefore a need for a comprehensive primary data on livestock production and consumption for effective planning purposes.
